Why You Should Be Interested In Starting Your Own Business

Make things happen

Follow your passion, create your own destiny, work with the people you want and make your own hours!  Doesn’t this all sound appealing?  If you already have a skill you can always do consulting or hire yourself out as an independent contractor to those needing your services.

But what if you don’t?  Then you need to produce something of value that others want to purchase.  I started off in direct sales and it gave me the fundamental building blocks to create my own business.  With a direct sales company you can become an independent contractor selling their products, telling their story and using their marketing material.  In most cases it’s pretty easy to get started, you purchase their kit and call all your friends to have a party.  Notice how I put the emphasis on “THEIR”?  You will be selling THEIR company to YOUR friends.  You will usually receive about 25% of the profits but you are required to purchase their monthly special items to demo at your parties which eats up most of “YOUR” profit.

The opportunities to start your own business are limitless.  You can start a business on a shoestring budget and make good money to support your and your family.  To become an ENTREPRENEUR you will need to be able to work independently and motivate yourself, set goals to achieving success and be passionate about what you do. Be organized, have a strong desire to create and not afraid of failure.

Every month about 1 million people are going through a job loss, changing  their careers or adding a second job.  If you are  relying on your income to pay the bills you can still start-up your own company NOW.  That way when it becomes profitable you can quit your day job and work FULL TIME in your own business.  I see it all the time.  It took me about 1 year before I was able to quit my day job and work full-time in my own business. You can do it and I can help you pave the way to success!

The annual gross sales of 250,000 soap making business range from $5,000- 10 Million. Many  are second businesses but some are FULL TIME successes.  You will need to work hard and  have your eye on the prize.  If you are ready to put in the hard work and reap the benefits of your business join us for our next Weekend Fast Track Soapmaking Business Workshop on September 20-21, 2014.

5 Top Mistakes When Working With Color In Soapmaking

1. SELECTING TOO MANY DARK COLORS– I go back to my photography composition and rule of thirds skills on this one. It’s important to create balance, a good balance of light and dark.

2. NEGLECTING TO TEST YOUR COLORS BEFORE YOU SWIRL THEM– This one is important because if you know what the outcome is going to be then designing the outcome will be easier. Swirling a batch of soap is not a good time to find out your beautiful blue turned pink on you.

3. IGNORING YOUR SCENT COLOR FAMILY– All scents smell like a color. If for example you make an ocean/air/ozone soap—you immediately think blue. Now is not the time to make it a pretty dark brown color with a gold swirl. It will throw your customers off. People gravitate toward color and the ones that like blue scents may not like brown which may signify sweet. (which would be the brown/gold swirl one)

4. USING A FRAGRANCE THAT IS NOT CLEAR TO START WITH– The color of your fragrance or essential oil could change the colors you are expecting. For example, if you use a fragrance that was a dark yellow and you are adding a pretty blue color, you may end up with a green version of it instead of the pretty blue you started with. If the fragrance contains vanilla it will darken over time no matter how much white you apply.

5. FORGETTING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTRAST– You need a good color wheel to find that magical opposite color. Opposites attract and stand out—good ones anyway. To purchase a good color wheel see more here: COLOR WHEEL

Hope this helps a little, we will be posting more tips and tricks for using color very soon— stay tuned!

Education is Key in the Soapmaking Business

Advanced Soapmaking Design Classes

Educating your customers about your products will increase your credibility and sales. Knowledge of the ingredients and teaching your customers about the value and benefits of using your natural products over store bought items will increase loyalty as well.  Sharing why your products are different,  i.e. Whether you use special ingredients such as clay or  silk in your soaps.  Will help you stand out in front of the crowd.

Putting “YOU” into YOUR business will make your business different.  There will always be someone else who makes a better product or can package it in a way that sells them off the shelf. But nobody can make it the same way you can. I reference cooks here, no two cooks can make the same recipe and both taste exactly the same. Maybe it’s environmental or maybe it’s the “YOU”, you just put into making it.

As it seems now, swirling colors in the soaping world seem to be the hottest thing. A few talented soapmakers out there can create the most incredible designs in soap using color and technique that seems to be un-reachable.  But through youtube.com and Facebook groups everyone now has access to the “how”.  So I ask you? Do you want to be a follower or a leader? Do you follow the rest just to see if you can do it or are the 1st one to create it.  Then I ask you why is this important? If you are busy following and your soap looks exactly like everyone else’s design, how does your new customer choose? If they have seen this same soap design somewhere else then it will come down to money.  Who’s the better price between the two.  See where I am going with this?  What you do not want to do is put yourself in direct competition with other folks who are already doing it well. Start off by finding your own way, what are YOU passionate about and how can you make it your own?

Making your mark in the business isn’t simple but it can keep you on your toes.  In our Aug 10 Soap Design Class I can show you how to make it your own by learning about color and different methods to creating a unique artisan soap.
